Jannik Sinner does not know whether he can participate in Roland Garros. The number two in the world is struggling with a hip injury and may not be fit enough for the Grand Slam tournament in Paris in three weeks.
Sinner was injured last week during the Masters tournament in Madrid. The 22-year-old in-form Italian withdrew from his quarter-final against Félix Auger-Aliassime. He will also not play at the tournament in Rome this week.
“I’m not playing for a while now and then we’ll see how things go from next week,” says Sinner. “We saw on the MRI scan that something is not 100 percent okay. We have everything under control.”
Sinner realizes that time is running out for Roland Garros. “The preparation will of course not be optimal. I will only play in Paris if I am 100 percent. Recovery is the most important thing.”
Roland Garros starts on May 26. It is the second Grand Slam tournament of the year. In January, Sinner won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open by beating Daniil Medvedev in the final.
Sinner is actually having a strong season. The global number two also won the tournaments in Miami and Rotterdam. He came a long way at the prestigious tournaments of Indian Wells and Monte Carlo.
