Santiago Gimenez was finally important again on Sunday evening and was even crowned KPN Man of the Match. The Mexican immediately scored a penalty from his first touch and later also managed to score his second goal of the evening. The striker currently has a good number of 26 goals in all competitions.

“First of all, I got a bit injured in the cup final and I couldn’t play against Go Ahead Eagles,” Gimenez begins his explanation about the fact that he had to start on the bench against PEC Zwolle. “Ayase played a great match and deserved to start.” For the Mexican it is extra motivation to start from the bench. “Of course. When you, as a football player, have good competition with another player, that is good because you can both grow. Of course this makes me stronger, but it also makes Ayase stronger.”

Gimenez was able to enjoy the farewell that Slot received from Het Legioen afterwards, he said at the press conference in conversation with RTV Rijnmond. “He deserves every appreciation that Het Legioen gives. He has made wonderful memories and won many prizes. So he really deserves this. We are happy that he is our coach and I have a lot of confidence in him. We look forward to these two more matches to play with him.”

When Slot was given his farewell, Gimenez did not yet look with a certain feeling that he would soon have to take this himself. “It could be that these are my last matches. I always try to give everything, but not specifically because I think these are my last matches. I always give everything, so this has nothing to do with that.”
