FC Utrecht announces that it has removed the option from the midfielder’s contract. The 35-year-old veteran, who is in his second period in the cathedral city, will therefore also be part of coach Ron Jans’ selection next season.

In January 2013, Toornstra signed for the first time with FC Utrecht, which took over the midfielder from ADO Den Haag for almost one million euros. After a season and a half, Feyenoord struck and Toornstra moved to De Kuip for 3.5 million euros. At the Stadium Club, the midfielder became Dutch champion, won the KNVB Cup twice and became an international for the Dutch national team, for which he would eventually play four international matches. In the summer of 2022, Toornstra, who was not assured of a starting place under Arne Slot, returned to Utrecht on a free transfer.

Toornstra is again a permanent fixture in Galgenwaard Stadium. On behalf of FC Utrecht, he played 31 times in all competitions this season, 21 of which as a starter. He scored four times in total, and provided an assist seven times for a teammate’s goal. At the beginning of this year, there were rumors going around about a return to his first professional club, ADO, but the veteran himself seemed to be more interested in a longer stay at his current club.

With the contract extension in hand, Toornstra can increase his impressive number of 557 matches in the Eredivisie even further next season. “He knows the ins and outs of the Eredivisie better than anyone and is now just as fit as during his first period at FC Utrecht. His statistics are downright impressive,” says technical director Jordy Zuidam on the club website. “Jens has a great track record, but always puts himself fully at the service of the team: a team player, who is still valuable to the team every week. Inside and outside the field. He is also an example for the younger players. We are happy that we will also have him available next season,” Zuidam concludes.
