Matthijs de Ligt has recovered just in time for Bayern Munich’s return against Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League. The defender even seems to be immediately given a starting spot by coach Thomas Tuchel.

De Ligt missed the home game against Real Madrid (2-2) last week due to a knee injury. Kim Min-jae, the Dutchman’s replacement, did not look good in both of the visitors’ goals.

Tuchel already seemed to reveal his defensive duo at the press conference. “At the moment, Eric Dier and Matthijs de Ligt are ahead (over Dayot Upamecano and Kim, ed.). They deserve to play together. Matthijs has been given the green light and can play.”

For the 24-year-old De Ligt, it would be his first playing minutes since April 27. Then he dropped out in the Bundesliga match against Eintracht Frankfurt. Earlier this season, the Dutch international also missed several matches due to a knee injury.

Tuchel: ‘We will also have to have a bit of luck’

Without De Ligt, Bayern was the better side against Real Madrid last week. Nevertheless, ‘De Koninklijke’ left Germany with an excellent result. “And now we have to win one of the most difficult away matches,” Tuchel realized.

“That is not impossible. And that is what we are going for,” the coach continued. “We want to get to the final at Wembley. We will have to make good use of the opportunities we get. And we will also have to have a bit of luck.”

Real Madrid-Bayern Munich starts on Wednesday at 9 p.m. The winner will face Borussia Dortmund in the final, which surprisingly defeated Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
