Borussia Dortmund was proud on Tuesday evening after reaching the Champions League final at the expense of Paris Saint-Germain. The Germans qualified for the final of the billion dollar ball for the first time in eleven years.
“If I have to put one word on our performance: proud,” said coach Edin Terzic afterwards TNT Sports. “We played very well against a team that is extremely strong and agile up front. It is incredible that you win twice without conceding a goal.”
Dortmund had a hard time at times against Paris Saint-Germain, who hit the post several times late. Yet the Germans won in the Parc des Princes, thanks to a goal by Mats Hummels. The 0-1 victory was more than enough to advance after last week’s 1-0 victory in Germany.
The final spot is a special success for Dortmund in a difficult season in their own country. ‘Die Borussen’ are fifth in the Bundesliga and were eliminated early from the DFB-Pokal. Few people saw a Dortmund victory over the star Parisian team coming.
“We have grown per match in the tournament,” Terzic explained in conversation with Image. “Every year you see a team that goes far, while not everyone saw it coming. Now we are. And the dream is not over yet.”
Special week for departing Reus
For Marco Reus, reaching the final was a special end to hectic days. The 34-year-old midfielder announced last week that he would be leaving Dortmund after twelve years this season. Reus never won a national title with Dortmund, but can end his time at the club with a European top prize.
“Unbelievable, what a week. We had to go deep, but we succeeded. Now it is important that we also get that cup, otherwise it won’t be anything,” Reus said at Amazon Prime.
Match winner Hummels believes that Dortmund can win the final at Wembley (on June 1), he said at DAZN. “Since the second group match we believed that we could win every match. I don’t see why we can’t win at Wembley.”
Reus and Hummels were there when Dortmund lost the final to Bayern Munich in 2013 (2-1). Coincidentally, that match was also played at Wembley. A repeat of that final is still possible. Bayern will play against Real Madrid in the other semi-final on Wednesday evening.
