Santiago Gimenez and Alireza Jahanbakhsh were guests on the Ziggo Sport program Kick ‘t Met this week. Discussions with Gimenez included his busy schedule, in which he rarely has time to relax. “I can say that I am more tired than usual.”

With the international competitions involved, the Mexican has little time to rest. “Then I spend ten hours on a plane and when I fly that far, I expect to play. If I don’t play, it gets into your head. But I keep working for it, I know it’s part of the process and I can play for the national team for years to come. I will remain patient and it will happen.”

The Feyenoord striker is honest about his physical status at the moment. “I can say that I am more tired. My holiday was only during the winter break during the last season. I only had one week. This summer it will be the same because of the Copa America (Mexico participates in the South American tournament, ed. .). Then I only have one week of vacation,” says Gimenez.

The 23-year-old top scorer admits that it is sometimes quite difficult mentally. “Last season, Slot said two weeks before the end of the season that I could go on holiday. I said no, because I want to play. That was also my mistake. Would I do that again? I don’t know. I feel mentally tired, but I love the game.”

Presenter Armin Shah points out that the long flight times for international competitions also mean something for your physical condition, to which Gimenez responds. “And imagine flying for that long and then only playing for twenty minutes. That is completely a mental battle.”
