De Telegraaf mentions reasons why Potter’s Ajax deal collapsed; Ten Hag back in the picture

--

Graham Potter himself pulled the plug on negotiations with Ajax in a telephone conversation with technical director Alex Kroes on Thursday evening, it was reported. The Telegraph. The morning newspaper reports that the Amsterdam team did not want to meet two demands from the currently clubless coach. Due to the failed deal with Potter, the transfer is made to Francesco Farioli, but Erik ten Hag also comes back into the picture

The hope of presenting Potter as the new trainer of Ajax was alive with technical director Alex Kroes until Thursday evening. According to club watcher Mike Verweij, the top candidate had added water to the wine, but his desired salary turned out to be ‘still too much’ for Ajax in the current situation of the club.

Potter also insisted on bringing his own scout. This was unmentionable for Ajax after the summer of 2023. The club wants to determine the composition of the staff to prevent passers-by from taking control again.

After Potter’s cancellation, Kroes switches to 35-year-old Farioli from OGC Nice, as expected. The Italian currently has the best credentials to become Ajax’s new coach.

Farioli stands up for the Amsterdam team and, according to Verweij, has also had several conversations with Kroes. The trainer is considered cheaper than Potter. There is currently no agreement with OGC Nice or with Farioli himself.

Ten Hag has also come back into the picture at Ajax. Kroes put an end to the name of the manager of Manchester United more than a week ago, after The Athletic wrote that the Dutchman will also represent the group next season the Red Devils.

However, Ajax does not rule out that Ten Hag’s hopeless defeat at Crystal Palace (4-0) last Monday will herald his departure. A deal with the 54-year-old Haaksberger is not obvious.

Within the Ajax club management, it is not expected that clarity will soon be provided about the sporting future of Ten Hag, who could also choose other options than a return to Ajax. In addition, Kroes does not want to wait too long so as not to lose the Farioli option. It was previously announced that the Amsterdam team hopes to present the new trainer in the short term.
