‘Game of Thrones’ star Hannah Waddingham (49) claims that she has suffered chronic claustrophobia from a violent scene she had to play in the series.

“Game of Thrones gave me something I didn’t expect”

Through the eight-season long series Game of Thrones there were many violent scenes that made your jaw drop as a viewer. One of these scenes contained the so-called Shame Nun, played by Hannah. She forced leading actress Cersei Lannister, played by Lena Headey, to walk naked through the streets of King’s Landing to walk.

Not much later, the character herself experiences a lot of misery when Cersei takes revenge on her. Hannah undergoes the waterboarding torture technique in the series and in an interview The Late Show with Stephan Colbert the actress explains what impact this has had on her. “Game of Thrones gave me something I didn’t expect, and that is chronic claustrophobia.”

The actress underwent waterboarding for ten hours and said it was horrific. She has since spoken to executive producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss about it. “I was like, good for you guys, because it was horrible.” During the scene, Hannah is tied to a table with leather straps and was unable to lift her head. “They said it would be too obvious if it was loose.” But Hannah didn’t like the feeling of the straps being so tight over her head.

Hannah was then given a wet cloth over her face over which water was poured repeatedly. This makes it virtually impossible to breathe and simulates drowning. In addition, Hannah’s hair was covered in grape juice and a fellow player held his hand over her mouth while she screamed. “I had marks everywhere as if I had been attacked.”

When Hannah encounters a colleague later that day, he asks her in surprise: “What happened to you?” The man in question had also endured a grueling task for filming. According to Hannah, he had to crawl through disgusting, muddy terrain for ‘four days’.

According to Hannah Game of Thrones never became a cinematrographic wonder, because the series is ‘on another level’. And according to her, that includes real waterboarding.
