I have a bit of a dual relationship with Atmos and other forms of multi-channel audio.
If it’s done well, it’s great and it can add a lot, provided the music lends itself to that. Not all music does that. There is little that can be improved on a single neutral singing voice with multichannel/3D sound.

But if the music lends itself to it, such as with multiple instruments/sound sources in a larger space, it can be beautiful. You have to make a separate mix for that and that is a lot more work than just stereo. However, remixing all the music is a bit too much work if you still have the original recordings, so that rarely happens. That is why smart algorithms are used to do it automatically, which works a little but not great, to do it well requires creative choices that such an algorithm will not make.

Nowadays I like to listen to the soundtrack of films because they are mixed well for 3D/atmos. It is made to be listened to on the good sound system of the cinema and there is the money to have the music remixed for the film by someone who specializes in mixing for those types of systems (most only have experience with stereo).
