Only dethroned after how many years? may have lasted more than 10 years.

That’s why I said it used to be the case, but not anymore . I play ESO myself, and I still remember that moment of change. I was quite proud (of Zenimax, not myself). That WoW was dethroned by them (and FFXIV of course). Especially considering ESO was eager to release it, had listened to a lot of community input and had really made something cool out of it. And that was precisely because it was by far the largest MMORPG for so long. Those 10 years of being unbeatable was what made it a big deal. And I have nothing but respect for Blizzard for keeping it that way for so long. But that doesn’t change the fact that it hasn’t been that way for a few years.

certainly a good argument

I also didn’t respond to anything except that WoW has long since been dethroned, considering he claims this never happened. I corrected that. His further post didn’t say anything about it.

I’m going pretty OT now, considering this is kind of a me thing. Anyways:
By the way, I agree with you that I often reach for older games. But that’s not it single that new games are bad, but also that my taste in games is no longer popular. Not in the general public. My favorite games date from 2000 to 2016 or so. And since 2010 you have noticed that it has become less to my taste. Too much simplification of gameplay, too much “safeguard” against making mistakes. On the other hand, a lot of games that I think are great are full of negative reviews on Steam. Especially people who say that everything is broken, but then come up with things that work fine, but where you have to understand the system and act accordingly and you cannot YOLO it without consequences.

I mainly play RPGs, so take Oblivion vs Skyrim for an easy example (the differences are clear and the games very well known). Skyrim is great, I have thousands of hours in it, but it is too simplified for my taste. You can hardly go wrong in terms of leveling and character building, you can’t accidentally kill useful NPCs unless there is a backup NPC, just to name a few things. Oblivion wasn’t perfect, but it was much better in those areas. The side quests in Oblivion were also better, while Skyrim has quite a lot of fetch quests in that area.

But I feel like a lot of those changes also stem from gaming becoming more mainstream. It became less pure for the nerds and Jan Modaal just wants to be able to play it and he often has less interest in first reading up on how the system works and then always thinking about it. So I don’t know if that’s really the beginning of the shift you’re talking about, or if it’s an isolated thing.

Anyways, I hope this is true.

There are quite a few shifts going on, and gamers finally seem to be gradually voting with their wallets.

Because I have been saying for some time that if people have such a problem with it, they should stop buying. People complained a lot, but all those games continued to achieve high sales. Well, then developers will continue in that vein, they deserve it. If I don’t count re-releases of old games (such as Kingdoms of Amalur on the Switch) and new expansions for old games, I think the number of modern games from after 2020 that I have bought can be counted on one hand.
