Netflix has reportedly started canceling Basic subscriptions of existing customers in countries where advertising subscriptions are available. The streaming service previously removed the Basic option for new customers in those countries. The Benelux is not included in this.

The streaming service previously announced that the option in question would be abolished in the second half of 2024, but so far this only affected new customers. Some customers are now saying on Reddit that the streaming service has sent them an email asking them to switch to another subscription before June 1, because the Basic option is disappearing permanently. If customers do not switch to another subscription, their membership will be automatically canceled, according to the email. It is not clear which market exactly is involved.

Netflix has been phasing out the Basic subscription since mid-2023 in favor of an option with ads or a more expensive option without ads. The company officially announced this strategy at the beginning of 2024, but did not say anything concrete about existing customers. It has been the case for some time that new customers in Canada, the United States and Germany, among others, can no longer choose the Basic option. Until now, existing customers could still use this relatively cheap subscription variant without advertising.
