In 1946, King Umberto II was overthrown from the Italian throne for supporting Benito Mussolini’s regime. Italy became a republic and the new constitution even stated that the Savoy royal family was no longer allowed to enter the country. They have only been welcome in the country since 2002.

Monarchy back in Italy

Despite these strict rules, the Italian family never gave up hope that the monarchy would one day be restored in Italy. For example, in 2020, the 86-year-old Prince Vittorio Emanuele, the son of the last king, placed his granddaughter Vittoria van Sovaoye in the line of succession. She thought that was a wonderful gift, but what good is it really for her to be the heir to the throne of a monarchy that no longer exists?

Vittoria’s father, the 50-year-old Prince Emanuele Filiberto, also plans to quickly renounce his claim to the throne in favor of his daughter Vittoria. To the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph he says: “I will be very happy to step down and let her take over the role, which I am sure she will do better than me. It won’t be tomorrow or a year from now, but when she’s ready. It is important that the younger generation has the opportunity to put new, modern ideas into practice”.

Who is Vittoria di Savoia?

But what can we expect from 19-year-old Vittoria? The Italian princess studies political science and art history in London, is a model and has a fairly large following on Instagram with 80,000 followers. Her father calls her “a rock and roll princess” because of her interest in fashion and social media. She has already posed for major fashion brands such as Dior and was on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine.

But what are the chances that Vittoria will have to trade her modeling life for the life of a queen? Very small, if we are to believe the experts. Although the Italian former royals hope for the restoration of the monarchy, it is unlikely that this will actually happen. This would require major reforms and, in addition, there is little support for a monarchy among the Italian population. Oh well, keep on dreaming…
