Motorola released Power phones in the Netherlands for quite some time, but suddenly stopped doing so a few years ago. Good news: the Moto G24 Power has recently become available in the Netherlands for 179 euros. On paper, the smartphone is an interesting and affordable option if you value a long battery life.

The question is of course whether the Power is really a battery miracle and how the smartphone works in practice. In this review we tell you everything about the new budget phone, so let’s get started quickly. If you would like to read a specific part of the review, please use the table of contents below.

The review model of the Moto G24 Power was made available by Motorola.

Design looks sleek

The Motorola Moto G24 Power leaves a good first impression. Although the device has a plastic housing, it feels sturdy and also looks neat. Motorola opts for a minimalist design and we can appreciate that. The device is available in two colors: dark blue and ‘silver’, which tends towards light blue.

At 9 millimeters, the smartphone is not very thick (but not thin either) and not as heavy as you would expect. Despite the large battery, the device weighs 197 grams, which is average. The Moto phone is quite large and therefore difficult to operate with one hand. We don’t recommend that anyway, because the plastic back is quite slippery and quickly slips out of your hands.

The back looks neat, with the cameras and a flash in a subtle bulge. The buttons are on the right: two volume controls and an on/off button with a fingerprint scanner. On the left we find the SIM card slot and at the bottom the USB-C charging port and a speaker. There is also a headphone connection.

HD screen with 90Hz

The screen of the Motorola Moto G24 Power is 6.56 inches, which is a nice size. The resolution of 1612 by 720 pixels, on the other hand, is quite low, so images do not look so sharp. It’s not a disaster and you can still watch YouTube videos and a series on the Moto, but if you squint closely you will see that everything is grainy.

A nice feature of the screen (on paper) is the refresh rate of 90Hz. This makes animations and images slightly smoother and the phone feels faster. You notice that, but not always – and that has to do with the speed of the G24 Power. The hardware is simply not powerful enough to always provide a smooth 90Hz experience.

There are thick bezels around the screen, but it didn’t bother us. Please note that the display is sometimes difficult to read, especially when the sun is shining brightly. If you are indoors, the maximum brightness is sufficient. In the settings there is an option to show colors slightly more saturated. Unfortunately, the viewing angles are disappointing.

Hardware is slow

Unfortunately, you shouldn’t expect much from the hardware of the Motorola Moto G24 Power. Not surprising, because the smartphone has a simple MediaTek Helio G85 processor. This chip is quite old and was already in the Moto G41 and Moto G31, which were released more than two years ago.

We wrote in the review of the Moto G31 that the processor was not that powerful, and in 2024 it does not hold up at all. The G24 Power is not dramatically slow, but you regularly see stuttering and starting up apps and games simply takes a while. If you come from a midrange or high-end device, this really takes some getting used to.

Motorola Moto G24 Power review

It is striking that Motorola is very generous with the amount of storage space and RAM in the Moto G24 Power. The phone is equipped with 8GB of RAM and no less than 256GB of storage: a lot for a budget smartphone. It is therefore quite a missed opportunity that Motorola opts for an old MediaTek chip.

Fortunately, the fingerprint scanner, which is in the on/off button, works fine. It unlocks the smartphone quite quickly and is accurate. It is not the fastest scanner and sometimes you have to put your finger on the button an extra time, but we can live with this given the low price.

Software and updates

If you’ve used a Motorola smartphone before, you know exactly what to expect from the software. The Moto G24 Power runs on a fairly bare version of Android 14, although Motorola includes bloatware. There are some games and a browser (Opera) on the phone.

That’s a shame, although fortunately you can delete all the apps. Some additional features can be found in the settings, such as the option to shake the G24 Power to activate the flashlight. You can also turn your wrist twice to open the camera app.

Motorola’s update policy is reasonable. Moto G phones like the G24 Power get one Android version upgrade and three years of security patches. That sounds poor, but for a phone costing 179 euros it is acceptable. However, keep in mind that you’re more likely to miss out on new Android features than with more expensive phones. In addition, there are manufacturers, such as Samsung, who support budget phones for much longer.

Cameras for simple pictures

Then the cameras of the Motorola Moto G24 Power. The smartphone has a total of three, although you will take most photos with the 50 megapixel main camera. The camera does its job quite well, provided the conditions are right. Like many other budget devices, the camera comes into its own when there is enough daylight. It sometimes happens that snapshots are overexposed.

In the dark, the Moto G24 Power struggles to capture enough detail and photos appear to move more quickly. The night mode (‘Night Vision’) makes pictures clearer, but not always better. This remains a budget phone and the camera performance is accordingly. However, you can use the Power for a picture on social media.

There is also a 2 megapixel macro camera on the Moto G24 Power, with which you can take photos from very close up. You shouldn’t expect much from this: the resolution is very low and colors quickly wash out. In practice, it is often better to zoom in with the main camera, because that lens is simply better.

Battery life as an eye-catcher

Of course, you mainly buy the Motorola Moto G24 Power for the battery life. The smartphone has a 6000 mAh battery, which is considerably more than we are used to with Android phones these days. The question is whether the G24 Power can live up to its name.

Of course, it depends on how intensively you use your smartphone, but in general you can use the G24 Power for two days. With intensive use, you should logically charge the phone earlier, although you can still easily get through the day. All in all, you never have to worry that you will soon end up with an empty phone.

If the battery is empty, it can be recharged with a maximum of 30 watts. That’s nice for a budget smartphone: the much more expensive Samsung Galaxy S24, for example, only produces 25 watts. However, due to the enormous battery, the Moto still needs two hours for a full charge. It is nice that Motorola simply supplies the fast charger.

Conclusion Motorola Moto G24 Power review

The Motorola Moto G24 Power is an excellent budget smartphone that mainly excels due to its battery life. The device has a long life and that is ideal if you do not want to worry about the battery of your phone. We are also pleased with the design, software and amount of storage space.

Of course, Motorola had to make concessions to keep the price low, and that shows. The hardware is dated, the screen isn’t great and the cameras are limited. There are more complete smartphones available in this price range, but that does not mean that you should ignore the Moto G24 Power.
