Should politicians do more against anti-Semitism?

It’s not easy being Jewish right now. Because of the war between Israel and Hamas, emotions sometimes run high. For example, a Jewish mother in Amstelveen was accused of being a child murderer at home because her daughter is in the Israeli army. Singer Lenny Kuhr was also called a terrorist during a concert and accused of genocide.

That is why outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte decided to speak out. He says he is ‘very concerned’ and calls on Dutch people to address each other about inappropriate behavior. After all, Jewish Dutch people have nothing to do with the situation in Israel, says Rutte.

Are we doing enough against anti-Semitism?

Jewish organizations are happy that Rutte is speaking out. But let politicians also do something, they think. A conversation This is the day (E.O.). Binyomin Jacobs clearly notices that anti-Semitism is increasing in the Netherlands, he says. As Chief Rabbi, he regularly speaks to anxious Jews.

“Ik denk dat we al veel te ver zijn. Dat geval met die mevrouw in Amstelveen… schrijnend. Maar het is niet iets unieks. Het staat niet op zichzelf. Er zijn vele en vele van dit soort gevallen. (…) Ik kan mensen wijzen op de kracht die ze hebben. Dat we als Joods volk de eeuwen altijd hebben weten te trotseren. Tegelijkertijd moet ik ze wel waarschuwen: pas tóch op en laat deur niet zomaar openstaan.”

Hans Wijel of the Central Jewish Consultation (CJO) recognizes the fear around him. He is grateful for Rutte’s words, but is especially curious about concrete measures.

“Het wordt steeds erger en daarom deden we een soort wanhoopskreet in de richting van de overheid. Doe er wat aan. Praat er niet alleen binnenkamers met ons over dat je maatregelen gaat nemen… dat het niet kan, dat het schandelijk is, dat weten we. Maar doe er wat aan.”

According to Chief Rabbi Binyomin Jacobs, anti-Semitism mainly stems from ignorance. That is why he advocates more education.

“Negentig procent, dat zijn mensen die eigenlijk niet precies weten waar het over gaat. Ze gaan mee met de meute en worden beïnvloed door media. Als je die mensen vraagt ‘from the river to the sea’… welke ‘river’ en welke ‘sea’ weten ze niet. (…) [Onderwijs is] the only way to get the herd going in the right direction, because that herd is going in the wrong direction.”

“Die dialoog moet er zeker zijn. Als je elkaar niet spreekt, kun je nooit tot elkaar komen. Maar een probleem dat zich afspeelt gigantisch ver weg, tienduizenden kilometers verder van ons vandaan. Ik vind niet dat we ons hier in Nederland daarover moeten opwinden.”
