At least nine sheep have been mauled to death on a meadow of the Den Treek-Henschoten estate near Leusden. According to steward Wilbert Nijlant, the animals were killed by a wolf, even though the area is protected with a wolf-resistant fence.
Nijlant is the manager of the estate’s agricultural area and told RTV Utrecht that he counted nine dead sheep this morning. “There may be more, but that’s what I saw,” said the steward. He also saw some injured sheep.
Last October, eight sheep were mauled to death in Woudenberg, not far from Leusden. The steward: “There is not enough natural food supply and so you get this behavior. This simply cannot happen.”
There is a one-metre-high, electrified wolf-resistant fence surrounding the agricultural area of the estate. But according to Nijlant, that is not a solution: “There are videos of wolves jumping over two-meter-high fences.”
As usual, Nijlant has informed BIJ12, which is the organization that investigates on behalf of the joint provinces whether it was indeed a wolf that killed the sheep.
