Will Feyenoord lose success coach Slot? ‘Liverpool interested in Dutchman’

The English top club Liverpool is interested in Feyenoord coach Arne Slot, various English media report. The switch should take place within a few weeks, once the current season has ended.

Liverpool sees Slot as a “frontrunner for the position”, writes The Guardian. “Slot’s performance on a relatively modest budget and an aggressive playing style has attracted widespread interest,” the quality paper states.

The German Jürgen Klopp is currently still coach of Liverpool. He won all possible prizes with the club, including the English league title, the Champions League and the Club World Cup. However, in January he announced that this will be his last season as Liverpool manager.

For a long time, Xabi Alonso seemed to be the main candidate for Liverpool, but the Spaniard has now re-signed with Bayer Leverkusen. Roberto De Zerbi, coach of Brighton & Hove Albion, is also said to be of interest to Liverpool.

Slot extended his contract with Feyenoord a year ago, despite the fact that he was being pulled heavily by Tottenham Hotspur, among others. That new contract, which runs until 2026, does not contain an escape clause for next summer. Feyenoord can therefore ask what it wants for the successful coach. “If a nice club comes along, I will talk,” Slot said last week.

General manager Dennis te Kloese also understands that Slot is well positioned in the market after his excellent performances with Feyenoord. “He has also developed well and really gave Feyenoord a face,” he said on Monday during the ceremony for winning the KNVB Cup. “But we recently extended his contract and of course we won’t let him go just like that.”

Slot led Feyenoord to the national title in 2023 and the cup win in 2024. In his first season with the Rotterdam team, he also reached the final of the Conference League, which was lost 1-0 to AS Roma in May 2022.
