From May 1, enforcers in Capelle aan den IJssel will have additional powers. They may also be fined for a number of minor traffic violations. “Enforcement of these violations helps make Capelle traffic safer,” said the councilor.

Enforcement officers are special investigating officers (boa). They are employed by the municipality and ensure safety and quality of life in the municipality, but also that people adhere to the rules. Boas are therefore allowed to check someone’s identity, issue fines and even arrest people.

Unlike the police, boas have specific investigative powers, so their powers are more limited. From May 1, Capelse enforcers will receive additional powers. They may also check for bicycle lights, running or cycling through red lights, and using a telephone on the bicycle.

“Relatively many violations here”

Councilor Eric Faassen (Integral Safety) is happy with the extra powers: “Our enforcers are the hosts of the city. They explain to people why there are certain rules and ensure that people adhere to the rules as much as possible. And if it is really necessary, the enforcer may fine an offender. The extension of powers to include (minor) traffic violations is a good addition, because we see a relatively large number of violations here. Enforcement of these violations helps make Capelle road safer.”
