A popular rapper in Iran has been sentenced to death for his involvement in the protests in his country following the death of Mahsa Amini, who died in a police cell. An Iranian newspaper reports this based on the lawyer of rapper Toomaj Salehi.

Salehi was arrested in 2022 for his public expressions of support for the protests and initially received a prison sentence of six years and three months. Due to the actions of the Supreme Court, he was not sentenced to death. According to the lawyer, a revolutionary court in Isfahan now rules that he will still receive the death penalty, which he believes is contrary to the court’s decision. “We will certainly appeal against this ruling,” says the lawyer.

22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish Mahsa Amini died in custody in September 2022, after officers arrested her for allegedly not wearing her hijab correctly. Her death sparked widespread protests and months of unrest in Iran.

Nine people have already been executed for their role in the protests. These included cases in which (fatal) violence had been used against the security services.
