Traditionally, royal awards are presented on the day before King’s Day. A total of 3,375 Dutch people will today receive a royal decoration for their social activities and merits. In Capelle aan den IJssel, ten people were surprised with a ribbon.

Mayor Cor Lamers presents the awards on behalf of the King. The decorated people were lured to the Van Capellen House with an excuse, where they were surprised by a speech from the mayor and the royal award.

“A wonderful day in which the King expresses his appreciation to citizens who have done something beautiful, good or important for society,” says Mayor Lamers about the Capels ribbon shower. He continues: “I have special appreciation for people who do so much (volunteer) work and who selflessly commit themselves to the Capel community and sometimes far beyond.”

A total of nine Capellen residents and one Rotterdam resident were awarded. The latter had recently moved from Capelle to Rotterdam. The following people received a decoration:

  • Mrs MJ (Marianne) Tobé-de Veer, appointed Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau

Read below why each decorated person received the royal award:

Mr AA (Ton) Bartels (Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau)
After his retirement, Mr Bartels became a volunteer at the SVS football club in Capelle aan den IJssel. He has been serving as a handyman and maintaining the facilities for over 15 years. He is also the leader of a football team and is committed to the association when necessary.

Mrs ME (Marike) Corver-Klee (Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau)
Mrs. Corver-Klee was a member of the parent committee of the Toverburcht child center in Capelle from 2008-2014 and provided weekly support with activities.

From 2010 to 2022 she was a volunteer at the RKVO de Vijfster primary school in Capelle. She was a member of the parent committee and organized activities, and she also took care of the school’s financial administration. She is now employed there as an event planner one day a week.

From 2017 she has been a board member of the Neighborhood Consultation Platform Fascinatio of the municipality of Capelle, from 2018 a volunteer at the Denk & Doe Mee Fonds of the municipality of Capelle and from 2019 founder and treasurer of the Fascinatio Buurtgroep Foundation, where she co-organizes neighborhood activities and is also involved in the Ukraine. assylum.

During corona times she volunteered at a travel agency and did administration.

Mr JS (Jan) Hadders (Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau)
Mr. Hadders has been a volunteer at the CVV Zwervers football club in Capelle aan den IJssel since 1985. Over the years he has done various things such as linesman, referee, referee coordinator, match secretary and organizer of youth tournaments. He also has many contacts with the KNVB. In the period from 1997 to 2017 he was also a referee for the KNVB.

Mr. A. (André) Nijmeijer (Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau)
Mr Nijmeijer has been a member of the SVS football club in Capelle aan den IJssel for a long time. From 1994 he took on the task of contribution administrator, later supplemented with the membership administration. From 2003 he joined the board and from 2007 in the position of secretary.

Mr B. (Bas) Schouten (Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau)
Mr Schouten does various volunteer work from his religious heart.

From 1992 to 1998 he was a member, deputy general and chairman of the Capelle Local Missionary Committee.

From 2013 to the present he has been a member of the maintenance committee, assistant sexton and deacon of the Reformed Church of Capelle and from 2016 to the present general member and treasurer of the Friends of Cedrah Foundation.

Mrs CCJ (Marjolijn) Schumacher-Verwijs (Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau)
Mrs Schumacher-Verwijs has been committed to the Restored Reformed Church in Kralingse Veer, the Laan Church, in Rotterdam since 2012. Located between the Capelle districts of Capelle-West and Rivium. Her commitment extends from within the church community, to activities for the people in the neighborhood around the church and, for the past year and a half, also to the reception location for Ukrainians in the Rivium district.

Through her efforts for the Laankerk, she also came into contact with the Diaconal Platform Capelle. From there she shows enormous commitment to the Ukrainians in Capelle, but also to the reception location for asylum seekers in Barbizonlaan.

Examples of her efforts include initiative for fundraising campaigns, games and craft afternoons, activities during holidays, assistance with placement in schools, supporting other volunteers and emergency care at her home.

All her voluntary efforts now include a full-time job that she holds in addition to being the mother of a young and large family.

Mr. E. (Eric) Smith (Knight in the Order of Orange Nassau)
Mr. Smith recently moved from Capelle aan den IJssel to Rotterdam, but was invited and awarded in Capelle. He was the owner of a midwifery practice ‘BovenMaas’ and is currently director-owner of the ultrasound practice BovenMaas Prenataal. He was originally a midwife and was one of the first midwives to also train as an ultrasound technician. During his career he campaigned for the improvement of obstetrics, in particular ultrasound scanning. He was one of the first to invest in an ultrasound machine in his practice in order to provide the highest possible quality of care to pregnant women in Capelle aan den IJssel, Rotterdam and the surrounding area.

He also performed pioneering work in the field of prenatal screening and prenatal examinations. Outside the practice’s opening hours, he supported the development of new medical equipment and new software programs. He helped improve quality, researched painkillers during childbirth and set up new partnerships. He was co-initiator of screening during pregnancy for congenital abnormalities and participated in large population studies. He was also active as an ultrasound trainer for midwives within the region and shared his knowledge and experience generously with others in the region and through national further training symposia.

Mrs MJ (Marianne) Tobé-de Veer (Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau)
Since 2002, Mrs. Tobé-de Veer has been co-founder and duo-chairman of the Neighborhood Consultation Platform Fascinatio in Capelle aan den IJssel. She initiated various district-related activities and acted as a sounding board for the municipality regarding developments in and around the district. She is a member of the core team, coordinates the working groups and promotes cooperation between residents and parties involved in the neighborhood. She inventories the wishes with residents and promotes the improvement of the outdoor space and public greenery. As the district grew, so did the consultations it conducted within the Rotterdam-The Hague Metropolitan Region, infrastructural consultations on river connections, housing programs and the road network. She also practically rolls up her sleeves when it comes to the Fascinatio Neighborhood Group Foundation, the Sjatoo 010 Foundation and, since the war in Ukraine, also for the reception location in the adjacent Rivium district.

Mr R. (Rob) Verduin (Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau)
Since 2002, Mr Verduin has been co-founder and duo-chairman of the Neighborhood Consultation Platform Fascinatio in Capelle aan den IJssel. The person involved meets weekly and attends meetings on traffic, safety, greening and neighborhood improvements. He coordinates the working groups and promotes cooperation between the parties involved in the neighborhood and the residents. He inventories the wishes of the residents and initiates projects.

From 2020, he is also vice-chairman of the Sjatoo 010 Foundation, which took the initiative to build a vineyard in Fascinatio. The first wine has already been bottled and the bottles sold.

Mrs. M. (Ria) Friday (Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau)
Mrs. Vrijdag has been a volunteer at Videoflimclub ‘de IJsselstreek’ for about 15 years since 1982. She was a hostess and member of the editorial staff of the association magazine. From 2014 she was a budget buddy at Samen 010 in the local shop Schollevaar for 8 years. From 2015 she was a member of the Social Domain Advisory Council for 8 years. In 2008 she started volunteering for De Zonnebloem, which she still does today. First 3 years as a board member, currently only as a volunteer in various activities.
