Marino Pusic is currently the main candidate to succeed Arne Slot as head coach of Feyenoord. Johan Derksen said this on Friday evening Today Inside. Valentijn Driessen confirmed that Slot’s former assistant, who is currently under contract with Shakthar Donetsk, is indeed in good standing with the Rotterdam management.
Pusic was head coach of FC Twente between July 1, 2018 and May 6, 2019, before starting to work as Slot’s assistant at AZ from the summer of that year. In the autumn of 2020, however, it emerged that Slot was in discussions with Feyenoord about the position of head coach. That didn’t go down well with the club from Alkmaar. It decided to suspend Slot. A few months later, Pusic also left Alkmaar. Slot and Pusic were reunited at Feyenoord. The latter closed the door of De Kuip behind him at the end of last year. He left for Shakthar Donetsk to work as head coach.

With that club he is currently at the top of the national league. Shakthar Donetsk has four points more than number two Dynamo Kyiv with six games to go. Pusic’s performance in Ukraine has not gone unnoticed, because according to Derksen he is emphatically in the picture to succeed Slot at Feyenoord. “I heard from usually a good source that Feyenoord is the first candidate Pusic, who is now at Donetsk”that was what it sounded like on behalf of the Mustache on Friday. “He worked with Slot in the beginning, also at AZ.” Driessen could not say whether Derksen’s rumor is true, but did confirm that the Rotterdam club management is charmed by the former assistant. “He is in very good standing with the management, yes”said the reporter The Telegraph.
Pusic still has an ongoing contract with Shakthar Donetsk. The 52-year-old coach finished with Shakthar in a Champions League group with FC Barcelona, FC Porto and Antwerp FC in third place. The Ukrainian top club therefore continued in the Europa League, but did not get past Olympique Marseille in the intermediate round of that tournament. After the 2-2 in the first leg, the French were 3-1 too strong on their own field.
