That switch was for British makers Harry and Jack Williams (The Missing) is not a logical step, by the way. In fact, the brothers initially did not even think about a sequel, as they previously said in an interview with the BBC. ‘While writing the first series we never took into account a sequel. But when we started thinking about a second season, we realized an interesting new question could be raised. Because how does Elliot, now that he is aware of the terrible things from his past, move on with his life? And how do those discoveries affect his relationship with Helen?’

Jack Williams, in the same BBC interview: ‘The revelations at the end of season 1 allowed us to raise the question of whether you can even be in a relationship with someone who did something like that. Is it possible to look beyond the past?’ Harry adds: ‘We also wanted to move the story to another country because we felt like we had seen Australia. It’s not even Elliot’s home country. That was also a question for the new season: where does he actually come from?’

Although a sequel was not even obvious, this series does The Tourist barely below the first season. The dark humor has remained, the plot twists are just as numerous and the chemistry between protagonists Dornan and Macdonald is still just as magical.

Memory loss is no fun for those who suffer it, but in this case it does make for a fascinating series.
