Ireland sends occult Eurovision act: does that go too far?

Is Bambi Thug’s performance too occult?

The non-binary, pagan artist Bambi Thug represents Ireland at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest with the song ‘Doomsday Blue’. Bambi Thug calls himself one oujia pop star. With that the artist refers to so-called Ouija boards, an occult instrument with which you can make contact with spirits and demons. Wat is het paganisme?

Bambi Thug’s religious beliefs were clearly visible during their performance in the first semi-final. During the performance, the performer sits in a pentagram with a ring of candles around him, which in witchcraft is a ritual setup to summon demons and spirits. An eye appears in the center of the pentagram during the course of the act.

Bambi Thug’s outfit is also not entirely suitable for a proper Sunday service in church: the Irish one has devilish horns on his head and wears jet black contact lenses.

A triskelion symbol is also painted on their foreheads. In paganism, this symbol has several meanings, but among other things it represents the cycle of birth, death and reincarnation. In Ireland, the triskelion is also often used on hospital doors to indicate that a patient is dead or dying. At the end of the song, the text ‘Crown the Witch’ is projected large on the LED screen of the hall.

If you look closely at the performance, you will see that Bambi Thug’s face and leg have vertical characters painted on them. These characters come from Ogham, an early medieval alphabet. If you translate the texts, it says ‘Ceasefire’ and ‘Freedom for Palestine’. The EBU, the broadcasting company behind the Eurovision Song Contest, has asked Ireland to refrain from political slogans during the final show.

You could say that the performance violates the rules of the Eurovision Song Contest because of all that symbolism. Promoting religious messages, just like political messages, is officially prohibited. How does the Netherlands respond?

Albert Verlinde responds at the table On 1 (EO/Omroep MAX) on the entry. Bambi Thug was his favorite performance of the first semi-final, he says at the beginning of the broadcast:

“Ik vond het echt fantastisch. Dit is een beeld waarvan je jaren later nog weet: dit was die inzending van Ierland. Ik denk dat dit hoge ogen gaat gooien.”

Tom Mikkers is theologian and Eurovision expert. The action is indeed outside the rules, he says.

“Het is een soort religieuze handeling die wordt voltrokken, en dan nog wel van het satanistische geloof. Heel vaak gaat het erover dat er geen politieke boodschappen in het Songfestival mogen, maar hier zitten we gewoon naar de duivel en een heks te kijken. (…) Duitsland moest dit jaar ook hun inzending aanpassen omdat het woordje ‘sh*t’ erin zat. Dus vloeken mag niet, maar vervloeken mag wél? We worden als het ware vervloekt.”

Music journalist Johan van Slooten sees it differently, he shares THIS. The Irish delegation did not intend this song to be a religious statement. Moreover, it is often difficult to determine whether a song is too religious or political.

“Dit begint al met de vraag: wat is occult en wat niet? Ik heb begrepen van de Ierse delegatie dat het optreden niets met hekserij te maken heeft. Het heeft te maken met oude Ierse gebruiken en mystiek. Het is onderdeel van de oude Ierse en ook de Angelsaksische cultuur. Als je in zo’n discussie verzeild raakt, dan kom je daar eigenlijk niet uit. Wat is dan religieus en wat niet?”

“Het is hetzelfde als met politieke boodschappen. Een paar jaar geleden had Georgië een liedje met de naam ‘We don’t wanna put in’. Dat was een verwijzing naar Putin natuurlijk. Dat mocht niet, want dat was te politiek getint. Dus die moest veranderd worden. Aan de andere kant, in 2016 kwam Oekraïne met een liedje over de Russische inval op de Krim in 1944. Dat is natuurlijk ook heel politiek getint, maar dat liedje mocht wel meedoen en heeft zelfs gewonnen toen. Dus die scheidslijn is soms niet heel duidelijk aan te geven.”
