Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific Airways has apologized for allegedly discriminating against a Chinese passenger. He would have wanted to ask for a blanket, but used the English word carpet (carpet) instead of blanket. The staff would therefore have laughed at the traveler.

“If you don’t know what blanket is in English, you won’t get one,” a cabin attendant reportedly told the passenger. “There’s a carpet on the floor, lie down on it if you want.” A recording of this is circulating online. But according to news agency Reuters it is impossible to verify whether the recording is genuine.

The allegation made by the passenger in question on flight CX987 has gone viral on Chinese social media. Cathay has since apologized.

“We have suspended the affected cabin crew member and have launched an internal investigation.” According to the complaining passenger, the crew on the flight gossiped in English and Cantonese about the passengers on the flight from Chengdu to Hong Kong.

The Chinese state newspaper People’s Daily says she is shocked by the discrimination against people who speak Mandarin. The daily denounces Cathay as a society that worships foreigners and respects Hongkongers, but looks down on mainland residents.
