French President Emmanuel Macron went to Brazil for a state visit to his Brazilian colleague Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. But looking at the photos, the three-day trip “looks more like a romantic trip than a diplomatic visit,” writes The Guardian.

‘Waiting for the Christmas card’

The British newspaper is not alone in this. On social media, the photos of Macron (46) and Lula (78) are the subject of countless memes. Former banker Macron and former trade union leader Lula as a love couple are central in edited photos with hearts around the heads of the two presidents.

The visit to the island of Combu in the Amazon in particular leads to many jokes: “It looks like a photo shoot for a wedding,” people say.

“I can’t wait for the Christmas card from the Macron-Lula family,” wrote another.

The visit to Brazil is the first that Macron makes to the country as president. “Today we are turning a page and starting a new chapter in our relationship,” he said.

Agreements have been made on new defense cooperation and hundreds of millions are being allocated to protect the Amazon. But France and Brazil still have strong differences of opinion on, for example, the war in Ukraine.
