Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will undergo surgery for a hernia on Sunday. He is put under complete anesthesia. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Yariv Lenin replaces him in his absence.

Netanyahu’s office said the hernia was discovered during a routine check-up on Saturday evening. It was then decided, in consultation with his doctors, that the 74-year-old prime minister would be admitted to hospital on Sunday.

Before the hospital admission, Netanyahu makes time for a meeting with the war cabinet.

Meanwhile, new negotiations are taking place on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages by Hamas. Israeli media report that an Israeli delegation arrived in the Egyptian capital Cairo on Sunday.

On Monday, the UN Security Council called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan. The United States did not agree, but neither did it exercise its veto power. With that, the call was accepted. Netanyahu is furious about the call and decided to cancel his planned trip to the US. The US is Israel’s strongest ally.
