After learning of a video that went viral on social media on Thursday, April 25, the Youth Affairs (JZ) police arrested two students on the morning of Friday, April 26. This is reported by the Suriname Police Force.

The video showed six young boys, five of whom were dressed in the VOJ school uniform and one in regular civilian clothes. The boys were provided with weapons and sharp objects, among other things.

The JZ police, who were responsible for surveillance work in the area of Mr. J. Lachmonstraat near the Technical School, found 15-year-old JH, who was immediately arrested. Shortly afterwards, the 17-year-old EP, who was also in the area, was handcuffed.

Both suspects have been transferred to the Youth Affairs police station for arraignment, where the case will be further investigated. Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining four boys.

Four of the young people have now been arrested, after which the parents also had to report to the police station. The four rash young people were brought to trial and, after consultation with the Surinamese Public Prosecution Service and a heavy reprimand by the police, they were sent home with their parents.

As agreed, the fifth student also reports to the Youth Police with his parents on Saturday, April 27.

“Young people/students, be aware of the dangers you carry with you. Weapons and sharp objects can cause serious injury or even death. In addition, you risk criminal prosecution if you are caught with weapons or sharp objects. The police will not hesitate to make an arrest,” it warns.
