The maintenance of (online) software is often a lot more expensive than initially thought. The costs of inspection and any software adjustments for safety reasons are more often disappointing than expected.

It is also often the case that software is written with a specific user pattern in mind. This often results in choices and methods that do not correspond to the users actually using the software. And then it may sometimes turn out that the software created needs to be significantly adjusted. This has to be tested for a safety product, otherwise you will get a lot of hassle. That costs time and money, so it must first be run in a test environment, then in an acceptance environment and only then in the production environment.

All those environments and their maintenance cost time, money and personnel. After all, it must all meet all kinds of safety requirements, otherwise your product cannot even be used under the insurance policies that users have taken out. Certification is often required for this. And you guessed it, that also costs time, money and personnel.

Then add some layered management on top of that and you will soon be spending a lot more than you originally anticipated. And you have to do all that, because you have an online product and you can expect it to be attacked a few times a month. Because you sell smart locks, you are immediately an interesting target for the less well-intentioned part of the internet.

You should assume that anything that runs online 24 hours a day can also be attacked 24 hours a day. “Build it and they will come”, that is a truism. Especially with an online site containing products such as smart locks. However, you have absolutely no control over who comes.

Not only does this result in unwelcome “guests”, some of them are even eager to cause as much damage as possible. For fun or financial gain. Such is the nature of man in general. In addition to laziness and wanting to get a lot of money for as little effort/labor as possible.

Any website, online 24 hours a day simply means that you are a target to attack 24 hours a day. So as a website owner you need to arm yourself against this. And that is not free and is often much more expensive than you had anticipated in your business plan.
