An island of 453 hectares is for sale off the west coast of Scotland. For almost 3 million euros you get a private island with sandy beaches, seven houses, a place to land a helicopter, a herd of sheep and your own pub.

The island is called Sanda Island and is located between Scotland and Northern Ireland. It has had countless owners over the years, from kings to the lead singer of a rock band, but is now for sale again.

At its highest point the island is 23 meters high and on a clear day you can see Northern Ireland. The island can be reached by helicopter or boat. The island is easiest to reach from the Scottish village of Campbelltown.

Pub

There are seven houses between the rock walls next to a lighthouse that stands on a rocky outcrop. Next to it is a small pub called the Byron Darnton Tavern. This is named after a ship that sank off the coast of the island in 1946. In 2003, the then owners of the island opened the pub, but it closed again when the island was bought by a Swiss businessman in 2010. The pub was open during the summer months during those seven years.

“The next owner has the option to keep the pub as a private residence, or use it as a public pub and make money from it,” Tom Stewart-Moore, who is responsible for the sale of the island, told CNN. “There is an opportunity to reopen the pub to offer something to people cruising the west coast.”

Own stamps

In addition to the pub, a herd of 55 sheep also feels at home on the island. “The sheep take care of themselves, they are the lawn mower of the island and require little care,” says Stewart-Moore. “They are included as part of the sale.” But there are more animals on the island. For example puffins, seagulls, cormorants and other types of birds.

Sanda Island is also known as ‘Spoon Island’ because it resembles an upside-down spoon and the island also prints its own stamps.
