A retired couple, aged 78 and 80, were victims of a home robbery in Kapellen on Saturday night in Belgium. The couple was surprised by two perpetrators, tied up and locked in the basement. A local resident was eventually able to free them the next morning.

The robbery happened on Saturday night in a house on Louis Palinckxlaan in Kapellen. “The residents were surprised by two unknown men in their home around 3 a.m.,” said Kristof Aerts, spokesperson for the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. “The couple was overpowered by the two suspects. They were tied up and locked in the basement while the men continued to search the house for possible loot.”

There is talk of a sum of money that the perpetrators are said to have eventually stolen, but this is still being investigated further. “The man and the woman called for help during the morning and this was noticed by a local resident,” the spokesperson said. “Then they were freed and the investigation started. The two residents suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.” The victims suffered minor injuries from being tied up, such as bruises.

The two suspects are still on the run.
