A court in Athens has convicted six people over devastating wildfires in 2018 that killed more than a hundred people. The six must pay fines of up to 40,000 euros for culpable homicide and gross negligence.

The six convicts include members of the fire brigade. A total of 21 people were on trial. There were also politicians among them, but they went free, much to the dissatisfaction of the relatives. This includes a governor.

The Greek Public Prosecution Service will most likely appeal the ruling.

In 2018, the seaside resort of Mati, east of Athens, was hit hard by a blaze. More than a hundred people were killed in just a few hours. It is one of the deadliest wildfires in Greece.

A lot is said to have gone wrong during the rescue operation. People were not warned in time and due to the maze of streets, many victims were unable to find a safe haven in time. Some fled into the sea and drowned.
