A Ukrainian has been sentenced to thirteen years and seven months in prison in the United States. The man has been found guilty of carrying out cyber attacks with ransomware via software maker Kaseya.

The 24-year-old Ukrainian is held responsible for the attack on Kaseya in July 2021. The attack on Kaseya made it possible to break into systems of all kinds of other companies. There, computer networks were then encrypted until victims paid a ransom.

In addition to the fact that the Ukrainian now has to spend more than thirteen years in prison, he also has to pay the affected companies the equivalent of around 15 million euros. In total, the Ukrainian played a role in 2,500 attacks, in which more than 650 million euros in ransoms were demanded, the US Department of Justice writes.

The attacks, which were claimed by the criminal hacker group REvil, had a major impact on companies. In Sweden, for example, hundreds of supermarkets had to close because cash registers no longer worked. Several companies were also affected in the Netherlands.

The man from Ukraine previously confessed that he was guilty of eleven charges. He was held responsible for, among other things, fraud, computer trespassing and money laundering.
