The new government of the island of Sint Maarten was sworn in on Friday with Luc Mercelina as Prime Minister. But two intended ministers cannot yet be installed four months after the coalition agreement. Their screening procedure has not yet been completed.
Marcelina has not made it clear why the Public Prosecution Service is taking so long to conduct the investigation. It often happens on Sint Maarten that the screening procedure takes so long. But the fact that part of the government has already been installed raises many questions.
Coalition party PFP demands clarity about the long duration of the procedure. One of the intended ministers who is still under investigation, Raeyhon Peterson, is from the PFP.
An incident involving a car accident a few years ago is known about Peterson. He then allegedly pushed someone who reported the incident. Peterson was never convicted of that. It is not clear whether this case is the reason he cannot be sworn in.
Cristopher Emmanuel (NOW) has also not yet been installed. Several investigations are said to be underway against him by the Public Prosecution Service, but that has not been officially confirmed.
Agreement was reached within 48 hours
The coalition parties URSM, PFP, DP and NOW had already reached an agreement within 48 hours after the elections on January 11. But the screening process meant it took another four months before the government could start.
Sint Maarten has had to deal with several corruption scandals since 2010, when it became a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Members of all four coalition parties regret that no clarity is now being provided about the situation, because it would encourage gossip.
