Russia announces a simulation of the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons. These are nuclear weapons that can be used on the battlefield to eliminate military targets. The exercise takes place in Russia’s Southern Military District, which borders eastern Ukraine.

“The exercise will start at short notice and the air force and navy will also participate,” the Russian Ministry of Defense said. “The goal is to maintain the readiness of the personnel and equipment of the units that have to fight with these weapons.”

The ministry says the exercise is in response to “provocative statements and threats from Western administrators”. This refers to French President Macron and British Foreign Minister Cameron.

Macron last week earlier stated that France would send soldiers to Ukraine if necessary to help that country in the war against Russia. Cameron said Ukraine could use weapons it received from the United Kingdom against targets in Russia. This was not allowed before, because Western countries were afraid of going to war with Russia themselves.
