A video is currently circulating on social media in Suriname showing that a large number of dead fish have been found washed up along the beach of Galibi. The local residents clean up the dead fish.

In conversation with the editors of Waterkant.Net, a tour operator explains that it is an annual phenomenon, but that this year it is much worse than before. The stench caused by the dead fish is unbearable and not healthy for the local residents, but also not for the tourists.

The dead fish have washed up all over the coast as far as Matapica. The situation has been going on for more than two weeks. The basjas and village captain are already aware of the situation.

The tour operator was also informed of the dead fish and, together with his team, tries to help clean up the fish every day. They are buried in a large pit to minimize the stench.

It is not yet clear why so many dead fish have washed up along the coast. Research will have to reveal the cause of the large fish mortality.
