The federal judge in the US state of Florida has indefinitely postponed the lawsuit against presidential candidate Donald Trump over the possession of classified documents. That case was scheduled to start on May 20, but a new date has not yet been announced.
The judge’s decision was already expected, because the preparations were not completed in time. Moreover, Trump is currently also scheduled to appear in court in New York. That case concerns the payment of hush money during the 2016 presidential elections. His team of lawyers would then have to attend hearings in New York and Florida at the same time.
Judge Aileen Cannon said it would be “inconsiderate” to set a new date at this time. This does reduce the chance that the case will be heard before the November elections.
Trump is suspected of illegally collecting secret government documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach. He is said to have taken it with him after he left the White House in 2021. He is also said to have thwarted attempts by the FBI to recover the documents. A total of forty charges are pending against him in this case. Trump says he is innocent on all counts.
