The parents of two murdered Australian brothers have reacted with shock to their deaths. The brothers were murdered together with an American friend during a surfing trip in Mexico. “Our hearts are broken and the world has become a darker place for us,” the parents said in a response.

These are the Australian brothers Callum (33) and Jake Robinson (30) and their American friend Jack Carter (30). Their bodies were found last week, after being missing for more than a week. The three were at the bottom of a 50-foot deep pit in a remote area. “All three were shot in the head with one bullet,” the prosecutor in Mexico said.

‘Live bigger’

The parents of the Australian brothers said in an emotional statement that their hearts are broken. “Callum was a loving person,” his mother told British broadcaster BBC. He was known as ‘the big koala’. “His brother Jake was a joyful, gentle soul full of compassion.”

“It’s time to bring them home to their family and friends, and to the ocean waves in Australia,” she continued. Finally, she urged people to “Live bigger and love more, in their memories.”

Murder over car tires

The prosecutor believes that car thieves wanted to steal the tires of the rented pickup truck of the brothers and American friend, but that the men resisted.

The suspected killers attempted to destroy the evidence, The Guardian reports. The surfers’ tent was burned down, the pickup was driven several kilometers away and then also set on fire. The bodies of the three men were then dumped into the four-metre deep pit.

The region where they stayed is also notorious for drug violence and it cannot be ruled out that the three were killed by a cartel, Mexican media report. There is a negative travel advice for the region due to ‘possible kidnappings and crime’.

Three people have been arrested in Mexico following the bodies found. The police have not ruled out that more arrests will follow.
