Customs officer Meredith R. was sentenced to eight years in prison by judge Lydia Ravenberg on Thursday for shooting her partner Marvin Simson to death on Boxing Day in 2022 in Suriname. The judge also decided that the suspect will be removed from office for five years.

In her last word, the customs officer indicated that she felt great sadness and regret for her fatal action. She had not wanted to kill her partner and apologized. She had been abused by Marvin before and had had enough.

On that day, Marvin was with other family members for a Christmas dinner at his home on Ronald Phoelsingweg. After Marvin and his brother took photos with the other family members, Meredith went into her partner’s phone. She must have seen something in it and got angry.

At one point, Meredith walked into the home and an altercation broke out between the husband and wife in the kitchen. The man of the house walked outside and the woman then threw the phone outside. Marvin hit his partner and walked away to pick up his phone from the floor.

In the kitchen doorway, Meredith suddenly pulled out her service pistol and shot her partner. Marvin was hit and fell. The brother managed to get the gun from Merredith and later handed it over to the police.

The police from the De Nieuwe Grond station went to the scene after the report from the Command Center. The victim was unresponsive and had now been taken to the Emergency Department by family members. Meredith had now left the scene on foot.

Marvin died in the emergency room of the Paramaribo University Hospital. The customs officer reported to the De Nieuwe Grond police station in the evening and was immediately arrested and taken into custody after arraignment.
