Winning design by VenhoevenCS and Wind Design + Build for a swimming pool in Apeldoorn Noord

The municipality of Apeldoorn has selected the design of VenhoevenCS architecture+urbanism and Wind Design + Build for a new swimming pool in the city. The winning plan is characterized by a prominent wooden construction and the integration of the building into its park-like environment.

Swimming pool Apeldoorn Noord is being built on the Vlijtseweg in Apeldoorn Noord. The accommodation will become a swimming and recreation center for both top sports and the neighborhood, including a 50-meter pool, target group pool, a paddling pool and recreation zone.

The assignment from the municipality of Apeldoorn concerns a Design & Build assignment. The swimming pool complex replaces the Sprenkelaar, which is now 50 years old. In 2023, the municipality issued a tender for the design and construction of a new swimming pool complex, to which four parties registered. Apeldoorn rated the plan by VenhoevenCS and Wind Design & Build as best on all components – design & functionality, architectural, urban development and spatial quality, and sustainability & quality.

Striking roofs and terraces
The architects have translated the sustainability ambitions of the municipality of Apeldoorn into a design with plenty of space for greenery and the use of natural and reused materials. The architectural concept is inspired by the beauty of the Hoge Veluwe and the local theme ‘Green and generous’, VenhoevenCS explains.

The prominent wooden construction contributes greatly to the appearance. The two striking, kinked roof shapes and the terraces at different heights create a dynamic image. In addition to the use of wood, the use of old paving stones as masonry blocks is a sustainable choice.

Connection with environment
The complex seeks to connect with its environment on all sides, says VenhoevenCS. This is done, among other things, via patios and stepped terraces, which create a natural transition from the surrounding greenery to the building. The glass facade also creates a harmonious connection between the swimming pool complex and its surroundings.

From the building there is always a panoramic view of the lush greenery around. At the same time, the openness of all facades makes the liveliness in the building visible to the neighborhood, according to the architects. The attractive plinth in particular encourages interaction between the building and the surrounding community.

All public spaces also overlook the baths, which enhances the atmosphere and sporting experience. Through the connection of the building with the neighborhood, the swimming pool complex can make a valuable contribution to the social cohesion and social participation of Apeldoorn Noord, say VenhoevenCS and Wind Design + Build.
