The offshore company Deme in Vlissingen-Oost is working hard on the enormous energy project. It is the first artificially constructed energy island in the world.

One caisson is about 57 meters long, 30 meters wide and weighs more than 22,000 tons. These caissons form the basis of the artificial energy island, which will be located approximately 45 kilometers off the Belgian coast. The island itself towers 10 to 18 meters above the water. It is not visible from the coast. In the summer the first caissons from Vlissingen go to sea.

The island will bring the wind energy from a wind farm yet to be developed onto land in Belgium. The island can also exchange electricity with the United Kingdom and Denmark. According to Belgian Prime Minister De Croo, it is also a strategic move to no longer be dependent on countries that abuse their position vis-à-vis Europe.

The cost of the shell of the island is approximately 600 million euros. Including all the cables and other infrastructure, the total picture comes to around 2 billion euros, although that amount could still rise due to the increased prices of building materials and labor costs.
