ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, is considering selling the social medium without TikTok’s algorithm. This is reported by a technology news site The Information. ByteDance would prefer to sell a majority stake to a non-tech company.
The Information, founded by Jessica Lessin, a former employee of The Wall Street Journal, argues that selling TikTok without the underlying algorithm would simplify the sale of the platform. In China, the government has control over the export of algorithms. ByteDance would prefer to sell a majority stake in TikTok to an American company that is not active in the tech industry, so as not to strengthen competitors.
Recently, the US Senate approved a total ban on TikTok. ByteDance has one year to sell the platform. If the company does not do this, TikTok will be banned by the United States. Although ByteDance is already thinking about selling TikTok, the company still plans to challenge the US law in courts. It is therefore not yet certain whether ByteDance will actually sell the platform.
