It has not escaped the notice of the observant motorist, we have almost reached the end of the current license plate combination. What will the new letter and number combination look like?

In 1898, the Netherlands was the third country in the world to introduce a national license plate, after Germany and France. In 1906 the system was renewed and as a driver you were required to have a driver’s license and number card. At the time, they were still issued per province.

The new license plates

In 1951, the provincial license plate system was replaced by a national system. The National Road Transport Agency (RDW) issues the license plates. And that’s a good thing. If you can pay for a number plate, you get scenes that you see in the Middle East.

We now have license plates that start with a Z. The current license plate series is almost over. At the RDW they know which combination follows after the last X-111-XX license plate has been issued. However, this remains a secret until the first new license plate.

Nevertheless, a scenario is very likely. The license plate will reportedly be in the order: XXX-11-X. Why do we think that? This new series of license plates can already be found on company cars, the so-called gray license plates that start with a V. The name of this series is side code 11.

It is therefore almost certain that the RDW also opts for the same order for passenger cars, but we do not know for sure. It is expected that we will receive the new license plate series this summer. This of course depends on how many cars are sold.
