The number of homes in the private rental sector has increased by approximately 67,000 rental homes in two years. There are now approximately 1.2 million homes in that sector.

Statistics Netherlands and the Land Registry report this based on new figures. The construction of new houses contributed to this increase, but also transformations of, for example, former business premises into residential homes and the division of homes.

Statistics Netherlands notes that private landlords will have acquired approximately 78,000 new homes between 2021 and 2023. That number is equivalent to 40 percent of all new homes added to the Dutch housing stock in that period.

The landlords of rental properties in the private sector are very different. There are private landlords, but investors and pension funds also own these types of rental properties.

The other landlords concern companies and foundations, such as housing associations, associations and church organizations. According to the statistics agency, the group now consists of around 432,000 private landlords.
