“We have been losing far too many employees lately,” sighs CEO Manu Lageirse. ‘Some cannot cope with the escalating aggression, others are simply getting too old, and now there are also drivers who could possibly become Prime Minister. This way we continue to mop with the tap open.’
Fred’s regular rides are in his own hometown, Haarlem. Anyone who has ever taken line 3 or 14 is familiar with his cheerful face. “I will certainly miss that bald head,” says regular traveler Tiny de Smet from Aerdenhout. ‘It became a bit like my Fredje. Anyway, who knows, maybe I’ll get a really nice Piet or Hugo in return.’
Fred says he has not yet been approached by another employer. ‘There was some interest from Arriva last month, but other than that I don’t know anything.’ The 65-year-old still has to think carefully about whether he wants to exchange the steering wheel for power over the country. ‘Will I be sitting there with Biden, what then? Then what are you talking about? I usually don’t get much further than ‘Good morning’.’
When asked whether he is concerned about the recent aggression and threats against politicians, he laughs: “I’ve been working in public transport for years!”
