Lee Towers has rarely turned down a gig in almost fifty years of performing. The Rotterdam icon never wanted to perform alone in a sex club. The 78-year-old singer said this on Wednesday in the program ‘MISCHA!’ on NPO Radio 1.
“I have four children, I don’t think that’s appropriate”
“I was once asked, 25 years ago, to perform in a sex club, together with Fats Domino,” says Lee. “I said, no, no, I don’t feel comfortable with that. I was promised incredible amounts of money if I did it. But I said, that’s not the point, you don’t understand. I have four children, I don’t think that’s appropriate. A kind of sense of norms.”
Partly because of his children, Lee never lost himself in drink or drugs. “In fact, if my children smoked and they came home, I would take their cigarettes out of their pockets and throw them in the trash,” he points out. “That is a matter of discipline. Today you see what an incredible social problem that is, and is becoming more and more. I am heartbroken.”
Once when he came into the studio and his musicians had smoked weed, Lee didn’t even recognize the smell. “I didn’t know what it was,” he admits. “The whole studio smelled. I got angry, I said: what are you smoking today? They laughed at me. I was very naive. Fortunately, I have always remained naive.”
The singer is anyway concerned about today’s world. “I don’t dare turn on the television for the news anymore,” he says. “What is happening in Ukraine, and in the Gaza Strip. I am someone who cares about that. I am concerned about what happens to those people there. I could never have imagined that this could happen to us after the Second World War. “
