A fire raged all night at a biofuel refinery in the port of Rotterdam at a height of about thirty metres. The fire started just after midnight in one of Neste’s factories on the Maasvlakte.

The fire service shut off the supply of oil through the pipes to the factory. The fire then burned out in the enclosed part of the factory. At 4:15 am the fire signal was given. The fire was out at 07:50, Rijnmond reports. The cause of the fire is unknown.

No one was injured, but several dozen employees of Neste’s factory had to stop work and go outside:

Neste is originally a Finnish company with its head office in Hoofddorp. In the factory on the Maasvlakte, used fats and oils, biomass and other waste are made into sustainable fuels, such as diesel and fuel for airplanes.

With a production capacity of 1 million tonnes per year, Neste’s refinery in Rotterdam is the largest renewable fuels factory in Europe, according to the company itself.
