The Dutchman who was hit by shards from an exploded jeu-de-boules ball during a weekend away in the Belgian Ardennes died on Thursday.

The family of the 37-year-old from Eindhoven has to deal with it on Friday Brabants Dagblad said to be “shocked” by the “sudden death”. “He will be greatly missed,” the family wrote.

The incident took place last weekend during a bachelor weekend of the Dutch group of friends. Things went wrong when a pétanque ball, which had ended up in a fire pit, overheated and exploded.

Shards of the ball hit the Dutch in the head. The man was taken to a hospital in Liege with life-threatening injuries. That’s what he was according to VTM News kept in an induced coma. The Eindhoven resident died on Thursday.

Keep balls away from fire

The Stavelot-Malmedy police are investigating what caused the ball to explode. The police are also investigating how the object ended up in the fire pit.

It is not the first time that an overheated pétanque ball “explodes like a grenade” and causes casualties, the Stavelot-Malmedy police said. They warned to keep the pétanque game away from fire.

The Dutch stayed in Rivage. It is close to the Spa-Francorchamps race circuit.
