The Netherlands should support chip companies in fulfilling their contracts with Chinese buyers. Chinese Trade Minister Wang Wentao said this on Wednesday in a conversation with outgoing Minister of Foreign Trade Geoffrey van Leeuwen.

Under American pressure, the Netherlands limited the export of chip machines from Veldhoven-based ASML to China. The company did not supply its most advanced machines to China, but since last year the penultimate generation of machines is no longer allowed to be exported.

The United States also wants the maintenance of these machines to stop. These valuable machines quickly become unusable.

The restrictions imposed by the US met resistance from the Chinese, who said at the time that they hoped that the Netherlands would follow its own course and not listen too much to the Americans. Nevertheless, the outgoing cabinet decided last year to impose restrictions on ASML.

Earlier on Wednesday, outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. He discussed the war in Ukraine with Xi. He also asked him to do more against abuse of intellectual property of companies.

Rutte also argued for a level playing field. By subsidizing Chinese (state) companies, they have an advantage over companies elsewhere. The Prime Minister did not want to say much about the disagreement with China over ASML after his meeting with Xi.
