The police issued 195 fines during a major check on a number of highways in West Brabant on Thursday. In 183 cases this involved holding a mobile phone behind the wheel.

The police held a so-called MONO action, which has been done regularly lately to prevent distraction on the road. Officers drove around in a coach and a camera was placed above the highway. Ten inconspicuous police cars drove near the coach to pull over any at-fault motorists.

A large number of motorists were fined on the A27 near Oosterhout. Many drivers were also ticketed on the A17 near Standaarbuiten.

One motorist was fined for clutching his cell phone between his shoulder and head. According to the police, this is also not allowed because it causes distraction.

The fine for driving with a phone in your hand costs 420 euros. During the audit, the state treasury was therefore filled with more than 76,000 euros.
