It has been known for a while that there will be a catering business in Tivoli Oudegracht in Utrecht and it is now known that the business will be called Union House. Work is still underway and if everything goes according to plan, the doors will open in April 2025.

According to Union House, the interior will reflect that the building has a special history. For example, the stage where Prince, Pearl Jam and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have performed remains intact. The monastery garden will also be put back into use.

“A location with such a history deserves a worthy follow-up. […] The restaurant will be located on the ground floor of the large hall with the former monastery garden as a terrace. The menu features classic dishes with flavors from all over the world,” says entrepreneur Peter-Paul Swijnenburg.

In addition to the catering business, there will also be a hotel with 46 rooms in the 700-year-old building and two daycare centers, but these are already open.

In 2018, real estate developer Stadswaarde won the tender to take care of the building, but due to legal procedures, the renovation of the building could not start immediately. That was possible in October last year.

Pop temple

Tivoli Oudegracht has a special place in the pop history of the Cathedral City. The building was squatted in 1981 and quickly grew into a musical breeding ground. Prince settled there for one of his famous ones afterparties after a performance at the Jaarbeurs. Other big names such as Pearl Jam, Artic Monkeys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana and Queens of the Stone Age also took the stage. In 1998, DJ St. Paul organized his first edition of Pop-O-Matic there.

Five years later, the drum ‘n bass party Blackout was born there and that same year it became the home base for dance icon Joost van Bellen’s ‘RAUW’. The latter previously told DUIC that he considers the location ‘the very best music venue in the Netherlands’.
