Purmerend – Previously, the municipality of Purmerend reported that the free market in the city center would be banned on King’s Day. This is much to the disappointment of many. The municipality acknowledges that they have communicated this in this way, but would like to rectify this. It turns out that there was a misunderstanding: the flea market is allowed to continue, but the municipality asks people to prefer to go to the Leeghwaterpark.
The confusion arose because the municipality had incorrectly stated on its website that the free market would not be allowed in the city center. This has now been corrected. The municipality emphasizes that it is not prohibited to look for a spot in the city center, but that people prefer to do so in the Leeghwaterpark.
Expected crowds
The reason for this preference is the expected crowds in the city center. Due to major music events at the Cheese Market and the Koemarkt, the municipality expects a huge influx of visitors. To ensure safety and accessibility, they want to concentrate the free market in the Leeghwaterpark.
The free market in the Leeghwaterpark takes place on April 27 until 4 p.m. at the latest. The places in the park can be occupied from April 26 at 8 p.m. Due to the cleaning after King’s Night, no places in the city center can be occupied at night.
Visitors who still want to have a free market in the city center can do so. However, the municipality hopes that people will respond to the call to go to the Leeghwater Park.

Purmerenders are relieved that the free market in the city center is not disappearing. “It’s a bit like King’s Day without a free market in the city center,” says a resident.
The question, however, is how many people will respond to the municipality’s call to go to the Leeghwaterpark. The traditional flea market in the city center is an important part of King’s Day for many. It remains to be seen whether the atmosphere in the Leeghwaterpark will be just as pleasant.
